Dr Gately delivered a lecture on the role of the lung cancer biobank at SJH and how it is used in her translational research programme which focuses on the liquid biopsy. Volga and Ezgi demonstrated how a patient’s blood sample is processed before isolation, ctDNA, exosomes (EVs), circulating miRNA, and proteins. The students were very engaged, asking the team some important questions. They were particularly interested in seeing the separation of the blood components and were fascinated to see some tumour tissue samples that had been fixed in formalin and paraffin-embedded, and some lively discussions ensued.
The team can’t wait to host more TY students next year!
